The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has lost its case against the Federal Government’s implementation of the “no work no pay” rule, as the National Industrial Court has upheld the legality of this rule.
The court presided over by Justice Benedict Kanyip, ruled that the Federal Government has the authority to withhold salaries of ASUU members who participated in the strike last year.
However, the court also emphasized that the Federal Government’s imposition of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) on ASUU members violates the autonomy of universities.
ASUU members should have the right to determine the method of salary payment.
The Federal Government took ASUU to court in response to the union’s demand for payment of salaries from February 14 to October 7, 2022, during which the strike was in effect.
