The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has urged for strengthened synergy with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to bolster border security.
He made this call during a courtesy visit by the Chief of Mission, IOM Nigeria, Laurent De Boeck, in Abuja.
Tunji-Ojo stressed the importance of collaboration, stating that the Nigerian government has more ground to cover in terms of security.
He affirmed, “We collectively have more grounds to cover and we will cover more grounds.”
The Minister commended the partnership between IOM and the Nigeria Immigration Service, particularly praising the Migration Information and Data Analysis System (MIDAS), which has streamlined access to information and data.
Highlighting the significance of integrating MIDAS and Interpol 24/7 for national security architecture, Tunji-Ojo emphasized the need for enhanced border security.
Regarding the installation of E-gates at Nigerian airports, the Minister clarified that they are exclusively for Nigerian passengers, aiming to streamline travel experiences while enhancing national security.
He acknowledged the limitations of human officers and underscored the importance of data and information for effective security measures.
Tunji-Ojo revealed the government’s interest in facilitating visa applications for legitimate visitors to Nigeria, aiming to simplify the process.
In his update, Laurent De Boeck, Chief of Mission, IOM Nigeria, highlighted the progress made on projects with the Nigeria Immigration Service, reaffirming IOM’s readiness to support the Ministry of Interior.
